Atletico Madrid leapfrog Real Madrid after Cadiz win

La Liga

Atletico Madrid is 13 points behind league-leading Barcelona, who only need two more points to win the championship, but one point ahead of the defending champions.

Struggling Despite a 1-1 draw with fifth-place Villarreal, Valencia is still in 17th place, level on points with Getafe, who is in 18th after defeating Celta Vigo 1-0.

Griezmann opened the scoring for Atletico against Cadiz in the second minute and added a second to extend his own stellar streak.

Joao Felix has no future in Atletico Madrid

In La Liga this year, the French attacker has 13 goals and 13 assists.

The Rojiblancos, led by Griezmann, have been the division’s top team in 2023.

Although it is too late for them to win any awards, passing Real does provide a small reward.

In the 49th minute, Alvaro Morata scored the third goal, and Yannick Carrasco scored the fourth goal on a penalty kick.

Immediately after Chucky Lozano’s magnificent consolation goal for Cadiz, who were 15th and just one point above the drop zone, Nahuel Molina tucked in Atletico’s fifth.

At Mestalla, Valencia’s Samuel Lino scored to offset Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson’s opening goal, preventing the hosts from suffering their fourth loss in as many games and keeping them just above the relegation zone.

Enes Unal’s early penalty gave Getafe a narrow victory, keeping Espanyol, who is in 19th place and three points behind them, in check. On Thursday, Getafe will travel to Sevilla.

Some of the damage from their 1-0 loss to Espanyol on Sunday was repaired by Jose Bordalas’ team.

Villarreal’s chances of making the Champions League are diminished by the draw, which puts them seven points behind Real Sociedad in fourth place after they defeated reigning champions Real Madrid on Tuesday.
