According to Foot Mercato, Karim Benzema (35), who today appeared to declare his international retirement in a social media post, may change his mind if Zinédine Zidane succeeds Didier Deschamps as France’s head coach.

Benzema wrote in a rather cryptic tweet on his social media that he was “proud of the effort and mistakes I made to get to where I am today. My tale is finished, and ours is coming to a close. A photo of the player wearing a France jersey was uploaded along with the message.

Deschamps’ future appears to be resolved in the upcoming weeks, however. The French manager will decide on his future in a meeting with FFF president Nol Le Grat scheduled for January.

Le Grat and Emmanuel Macron have both stated that they want Deschamps to continue leading Les Bleus. According to L’Équipe, if Deschamps were to continue, he would seek a contract that would enable him to lead the 2018 World Champions to the 2026 World Cup.

Something fell apart between the two, L’Équipe. According to a recent Foot Mercato article, Benzema might rethink his decision to retire from international football if Deschamps were to be replaced by Zidane on the sidelines.
