Champions League: Anthony Elanga rescues Manchester United

Madrid: Manchester United drew with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday thanks to a goal from substitute Anthony Elanga.

United and Atletico drew 1-1 in the first leg.

Diego Simeone’s side took the lead in the seventh minute of the game at the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico’s home ground, thanks to a goal from Joao Felix.

United were unable to make a memorable attack on Atletico’s post in the first half. Elanga put United back in the game in the 80th minute. He replaced Marcus Rasford in the 75th minute.

The second leg will take place on March 15 at United’s Old Trafford. Atletico have not won their last seven home games in the Champions League.

Atletico will face Celta Vigo in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday, while United will face Watford in the English Premier League.

In the other match played on Wednesday, Ajax could not maintain the lead twice and drew 2-2 with Benfica.

Dusan Tadic’s goal in the 18th minute gave Ajax the lead. Ajax’s Sebastian Haller’s own goal in the 26th minute brought Benfica back into the game.

Three minutes later, Haller scored again to give Ajax the lead. Roman Yaremchuk’s goal in the 72nd minute saved Benfica from defeat.
