Fiorentina defeat Inter Milan

Serie A

Inter, led by Simone Inzaghi, are still in third position and will play Benfica in this year’s Champions League quarterfinals. But, they are just two points ahead of fifth-placed Atalanta, which defeated Cremonese 3-1 earlier on Saturday, and AC Milan, with Roma behind by one point going into Sunday’s match against Sampdoria.

Inter, who won the championship two seasons ago, has now dropped three straight Serie A games and four of their previous five. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku both had chances to score for the home team in the first half against Fiorentina, but the hosts were unable to break through. The hosts dominated for extended stretches at the San Siro.

Five minutes after the restart, Inter should have taken the lead, but Lukaku somehow missed making full contact with Alessandro Bastoni’s low cross while he was three yards from the goal. Less than three minutes later, after Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana had stopped Arthur Cabral’s initial header, Bonaventura made him pay by nodding in from close range.

Fiorentina extended their winning streak in the top division to five games, getting within seven points of the European spots, but Inter never really threatened an equalizer.

Thanks to a convincing victory at bottom-of-the-table Cremonese, Atalanta has drawn even with fourth-placed AC Milan in terms of points. The team led by Gian Piero Gasperini won consecutive games each side of the international break, moving Roma up to fifth place and behind Milan in head-to-head record.

The gap between the top five teams is only five points as Napoli surges to their first Scudetto since 1990 with a 19-point lead.

Marten de Roon, a Dutch midfielder, gave Atalanta the lead just before halftime, but Daniel Ciofani’s penalty for Cremonese, who were doomed for relegation, pulled them back. With 17 minutes left, Jeremie Boga gave the visitors the lead once more.

Rasmus Hojlund, a fellow substitute who recently scored five goals in two games for Denmark in their recent Euro 2024 qualifiers, made a wonderful run and a low cross that the Ivorian tapped in.

“Rasmus possesses significant qualities, which he has abundantly demonstrated. He must maintain his attitude and level of focus at all times “The 20-year-old striker Hojlund, according to Gasperini.

In extra time, Ademola Lookman scored his 15th goal of the year—his first since January—to secure the three points.
