Liverpool officially sign Cody Gakpo from PSV

Transfer

Dutch World Cup star Cody Gakpo has officially joined Liverpool after leaving PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

According to The Athletic, the 23-year-old has officially signed a transfer agreement to Anfield, and Liverpool will pay an initial fee of £37 million, with the potential for add-ons to bring the total to £50 million. This will be a record fee for an Eredivisie team.

After agreeing to personal terms and passing his medical, Gakpo joins Liverpool at the beginning of the January transfer window and will play under the No. 18 jersey.

“I feel great, and I’m quite happy to be here. I can’t wait to begin practicing and competing for this incredible club, Gakpo stated.

He said, “I believe this is a fantastic club for me to join and attempt to demonstrate what I can [do] and try to assist the squad in achieving more lovely moments than they have already achieved in the past years.”

“There are a lot of great players here [from whom] I can learn a lot of things,” the player said. “I think for me personally it’s also good to develop here.”

After Diogo Jota and Luiz Daz suffered long-term injuries, Jürgen Klopp was obliged to enter the transfer market to find an attacking player.

Gakpo, who made a big impression for the Netherlands in Qatar by scoring three goals as they advanced to the quarterfinal stage, has now joined the Merseyside club.

Cody Gakpo has had an incredible season so far with PSV, tallying 12 goals and 14 assists across all competitions. In 159 senior games, he has accrued a total of 55 goals and 50 assists.

He received his first Netherlands cap from Frank de Boer in 2021, and since then, he has won another 13 caps, scoring six goals for his nation.
