Rodrygo wins Copa del Rey final for Real Madrid

Copa del Rey

Real Madrid defeated Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final in Seville, and Rodrygo scored twice as Real Madrid captured the trophy for the first time since 2014.

Following a shot by Toni Kroos that deflected into his path, the Brazilian was there to score the game-winning goal from close range.

When Lucas Torro equalized, Osasuna, who was competing in their second Copa del Rey final, had threatened an upset.

Rodrygo Goes: It’s an honor to wear Pele’s 10

After 106 seconds, Rodrygo scored the quickest goal in a Spanish Cup final in 17 years, giving Real the early advantage.

With approximately 25,000 supporters cheering them on inside the Estadio de La Cartuja, Osasuna had a chance to win their first major prize in 103 years.

They were denied an equalizer in stoppage time when Dani Carvajal made a desperate block to halt Kike Barja’s sidefooted attempt.

The Little Reds, or Los Rojillos, had five more shots on goal than Real did, but Carlo Ancelotti’s team was ultimately more ruthless in front of goal.

Real’s victory earns them their 20th Copa del Rey championship, and they are now focused on the first leg of their Champions League semifinal against Manchester City on Tuesday.

Osasuna’s party was really ruined

In anticipation of Saturday’s championship game, Osasuna supporters traveled in big numbers and painted Seville red, but the game’s opening on the pitch could not have been worse.

After Ancelotti made five changes to the team that lost to Real Sociedad, Vinicius Jr. returned to the Real starting lineup and quickly established himself as a consistent threat down the left.

The Brazilian outran his defender, crossed the byline, and then cut the ball back across the goal face for Rodrygo to score the game’s first goal.

Karim Benzema nearly made Osasuna’s task even more difficult by forcing Sergio Herrera into a deft save, but Jagoba Arrasate’s team was starting to get control of the game and had a chance to tie it up a minute later.

Abde Ezzalzouli advanced toward goal after eluding Eder Militao’s challenge, but he was unable to direct his chipped effort on goal despite beating Thibaut Courtois.

After the halftime, Torro scored the equalizer against his former team with a calm finish from outside the box, sending the red half of the stadium into a frenzy.

Play was briefly stopped while stewards used a fire extinguisher on a loose pyrotechnic near the Osasuna supporters. This caused some of the excitement to spill over.

Rodrygo meets his biggest idol

However, Madrid was always a threat. When Vinicius Jr. again broke through down the left and pulled the ball back from the byline, Kroos’ attempt deflected off Garcia, allowing Rodrygo to pounce and bring the ball into the net.

Barcelona appears to be in line to win La Liga, thus Ancelotti’s team will likely celebrate before focusing on the Champions League.

The defending champions will be hopeful Luka Modric can recover from a hamstring injury in time to play City in the opening leg at the Bernabeu.
