Romelu Lukaku has now scored more goals in open play this season than he has missed opportunities to score.

The Belgian’s loan season at Inter has been genuinely terrible, and on Friday, it hit a new low.

Lukaku squandered several opportunities to end the game when Inter had a 1-0 lead in a game that Inter had to win at Salernitana.

This includes a clear goal from only a few yards away that he managed to somehow head onto the crossbar.

The error cost Inter dearly as Antonio Candreva’s 90th-minute equalizer earned Salernitana a point and put Inter in very real danger of missing out on the Champions League.

Lukaku has just missed an easy Serie A goal for the second time in a row.

He missed an empty net last week while playing for his team in a 1-0 loss to Fiorentina at home.

Lukaku appeared to have a simple tap-in opportunity to an empty net after Alessandro Bastoni crossed the six-yard area, but the Belgian mishandled his effort.

Four minutes later, Giacomo Bonaventura gave Fiorentina the victory, making Lukaku pay for his mistake.

Lukaku open goal misses

In the last two Serie A games for Inter, Lukaku has now missed more open goals than goals from open play.

The 29-year-old has only managed one open-play goal for Inter in Serie A this season. His only other two goals came from the penalty spot, bringing his total to just three. Lukaku has scored six goals across all competitions, including another penalty in the Coppa Italia and two more in the Champions League.

Lukaku may be sent back to Chelsea by Inter Milan at the completion of the current campaign.

This past summer, Lukaku returned to Inter on a season-long loan from Chelsea, but he has had terrible fitness and form issues.

He also performed poorly at the World Cup, missing numerous excellent opportunities in Belgium’s 0-0 draw with Croatia that sent them home from the group stage. One more open goal missed was among these failures.
